Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to challenge specific calls from the official, following the system already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
