Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
